All of our professionals maintain the highest levels of accreditation and pursue ongoing education to stay abreast of the latest trends in dentistry.
I grew up in Wichita, Kansas, where I started my career in dentistry at the age of 14. I began working for my father after school, on Saturdays, and during the summer breaks. My family moved to Asheville, where my dad became chief of staff at the VA clinic. I worked for several dentists in town as a dental assistant before I finally decided to go to dental school. The thought of possibly staying in North Carolina persuaded me to apply to the University of N.C. at Chapel Hill undergraduate program. During the four years of undergraduate school while I was earning a BS in Biology, I worked at the dental school under Dr. Tim Turvey. He was a respected dentist who specializes in cleft lip and cleft palate repairs. I entered the dental program at Chapel Hill and graduated in 1987. I completed a post grad year in Advanced General Dentistry before moving back to Asheville, NC, where I opened my general dental practice.
I am married to my wonderful husband of 20 years and till this day he continues to make me laugh. We have two beautiful girls ages 16 and 18. They are a rising junior at Asheville School and a freshman at High Point University. Cammie our 16 year old is a boarding student. They have both spent a lot of time in my office. You will see Cammie as a chair side assistant, she has done a great job. Merritt is a little more squeamish and she would be found more on the front desk or in the sterilization area. It will be interesting to watch them grow and become adults and see what direction they take.
I became a dentist because I wanted to make a difference for all the people that have had bad experiences going to the dentist. I want to make their visit as comfortable and easy a possible. We want the children in our practice to grow up unafraid of going to the dentist and with the knowledge to take care of their teeth and prevent disease, not only in the mouth but their body as a whole.
The other joy in dentistry for me is the new technology. It is phenomenal to be able to generate a crown or an onlay with a computer right in my office. With this new technology we can prepare a tooth for a crown and generate it in our office and deliver it the same day. Patients no longer have the impressions or temporaries they would typically have to wear for 3-4 weeks.
I look forward to the future dentistry, and being on the cutting edge of the new technology that is around the corner.
My staff works as a team so you will see dental assistants helping our hygienist and the hygienist helping patients at the front desk. Everybody is cross trained so they can step into any other position in my office. We pride ourselves in community service, especially the sealant program put on by the Eblen foundation. My staff is required to keep up their education. They spend many evenings, Fridays and Saturdays going to continuing education courses so we can all stay on the cutting edge of dentistry.
Dr. Teresa Bare completed her undergraduate education at Wake Forest University and her dental degree was obtained from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She then completed a one year General Practice Residency at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, NC. She worked in the Winston-Salem area from 1990 to 1998 at which time her family moved to Asheville. She has worked with Dr. Willoughby since April of 1999.
Practicing dentistry is an honor and it is fulfilling to help patients learn how to care for their own oral health. Dr. Bare enjoys providing many aspects of patient care, but is the only dentist in our practice who performs oral surgery procedures. She volunteers with the North Carolina Baptist Men Medical/Dental Bus when it comes to the Mountain State Fair in September and in the spring when it comes to provide care for the local Slavic population.
Dr. Bare lives in South Asheville with her family which includes her husband, Dr. Rick Bare and children Alec, Elise, Emily and Natalie. She enjoys family activities, bee keeping, reading and is a member of the Arden First Baptist Church.
Nicole Mathis - Dental Assistant
I am Dr. Willoughby's assistant and couldn't imagine being anywhere else. I am from Burnsville, which is 40 Miles north of Asheville and as country as it gets. I am married to the love of my life Brandon and have four boys; Gabriel, Levi, Logan and Griffin. I have been in the dental field for the last 10 years, 4 of which have have been spent here with Dr. Willoughby and Dr. Bare. I started out in Spruce Pine, North Carolina learning everything I know from a wonderful lady, by the name of Dr. Barbara Bressert, D.D.S. Her passion and dedication to dentistry inspired me to learn as much as I could, especially about all the technology and the CEREC machine. I worked for her for 5 years and then decided I would like to work in endodontics doing root canals. I did that for a year and decided I wasn't able to use all the skills in endodontics that I had worked so hard to learn. I finally found Dr. Willoughby's office a wonderful place to settle. She takes time with each patient to not just do the dentistry they need, but to make a friend and make them part of our practice. The technology in dentistry is changing every second and that is what is so great and exciting about the job I do. The procedures that we all use to dread are really not that bad anymore. I wish I had a dollar for every time a patient comes in and is scared to death and when we sit them up after we are done they say, "Wow, that wasn't so bad at all, I can't believe I even dreaded it." That is why I love dentistry!!! When I'm not in the office I enjoy being outside with my boys. They are so full of life and teach me so much everyday. I also love riding and caring for our horses, they always make a bad day better. We have a holler full of critters including horses, chickens, dogs, rabbits and goats where my boys romp and stomp. Life is good!
Brandi Ball - Dental Hygienist
I am the Registered Dental Hygientist here with Drs. Willoughby and Bare. I am from Burnsville and have been friends with Nicole, one of our dental assistants since grade school. That is how I became part of the team here. I have been practicing dental hygiene for over 6 years and I thoroughly enjoy interacting with the patients to help them achieve optimal oral health. I love working here with our doctors because of their passion for dentistry and bringing the best care possible to our patients. I love working with everyone here. We are all friends and help each other out. That makes work fun. We stay up to date on the lastest and greatest in technology so we can offer the very best to our patients. I obtained a degree in Dental Assisting from Asheville Buncombe Technical Community College in 2003, along with our assistant Eve, and an Applied Science in Dental Hygiene in 2005. In my spare time , I enjoy spending time outdoors. I have the best friends in the world and we are always planning a new "adventure:. Gardening is something I enjoy and I can never turn down a tubing trip down the South Toe River. I also enjoy spending time with my "baby", a Shih Tzu named Bella.
Cheri Holland - Patient Coordinator
I was born in Byrn Mawr, Pennsylvania. Then, shortly after my family moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. At 9 years old we moved to Franklin, North Carolina. Many years later, my family moved back to Florida, but I was the smart one and moved to Asheville. I love the beautiful mountains, great people and the awesome change of seasons. I later reconnected with my knight in shining armor from Franklin, Jerry. We decided to bite the bullet and got married in 1998. We were blessed with our beautiful little girl Jenna in 2001. I love spending time with my family and friends, reading and vacationing in Sanibel Island, and learning new crafts. My husband and I love birdwatching when time allows and we hope to get Jenna interested.
I've have worked in a dentist and oral surgeons office for 15 years now. Doing everything from patient coordinator, scheduling, PR and helping clinical staff clean rooms and seating patients. I love getting to know patients, smiling and going the extra mile for them whenever I can. I love working with Drs. Willoughby and Bare because they truly care about their patients and community. We have a great team which makes work a pleasure :-)
